TEMPO RUBATO - We staged this new piece site specifically at the beautiful San Cataldo Cemetery by Aldo Rossi, appreciated internationally for his theories, drawings and architecture like the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht (NL). All walkscapes made with Walk With Me are permanent, also this composition can be downloaded in the app and experienced on location at this very moment !

Exploring the relationship between sound and space, Strijbos & Van Rijswijk have devised a new site-specific performance, Tempo rubato – Walk with me, a sound project in the form of an app that can be enjoyed from the comfort of your smartphone. In the walkscape, natural, musical and vocal sounds are mixed and overlapped with those of the surrounding environment and processed in real time. Each spectator, walking with their mobile phone and headphones along a route that begins at the Villaggio Artigiano and ends at Aldo Rossi’s Monumental Cemetery, follows the directions of the app and builds a personal sound story, freely choosing their own ending.

Our team includes dramaturg Rita Hoofwijk, soprano Laura Giavon and libretto writer Giacomo Pedini, who are collaborating with us to create a unique version of Walk With Me for this festival in Modena.

Tempo Rubato – Walk With Me is a co-production with the Periferico Festival in Modena and Mittelfest in Cividale del Friuli (Italy).

"What we especially appreciate of their works is that they are able to change the spectator’s point of view on the city and to move emotions by majestically playing with recorded urban sounds that are perfectly intersected with opera singing. This very fine artwork on the sound introduces a new lyricism into the urban landscape which is unique and special."
