For Chillida Leku in San Sebastian (ESP) we will transform our landscape opera Signal especially for the museum park during summer solstice.

“Proximity is subdued and overwhelming at the same time.” – AD (Dutch national newspaper)

And as admirers of the work of sculptor Eduardo Chillida we know how important music was for him. The play between matter and space as essential components of sculpture, as much as sound and silence are fundamental aspects of music. We ourselves also have a strong interest in the relationship between visual art, landscape and music. Inspired by Chillida’s work we created in the past a homage to him and poet Jorge Guillén by naming one of our landscape opera’s ‘Lo Profundo es el Aire’ (2018) and using the poem as libretto.

We see much value in linking music and its sounding environment. The mystical interplay between landscape and sound releases emotions. We compose especially for specific locations, and ultimately provide a ‘meeting’ between the audience, a place and our musical performance. There is unity of time, place and action. These musical works are comparable to sculpture through the spatial set up in which visitors can wander around.

They have the aim to turn again to times gone by: to the ritual. Music can catalyse a unique ‘conversation’ between the public realm and the intimate inner self. By nature humans look first, the visual (art) is primary, and sound follows it as part of the puzzle of perception.

In collaboration with famous musician and composer David Chalmin (FR) – who lives and runs the studio ‘La fabrique des Ondes’ – with piano duo Katia & Marielle Labèque sisters in the Basque country in France – we will develop a new performance in the visual scope of the Chillida Leku park. Moreover, the surroundings of Chillida Leku will become the unique backdrop for a musical performance that invites the audience to walk, think, and (re)discover the space.

We’re also looking forward to the new collaboration with the Basque sopranos Carolina Luquin Duarte & Haizea Muñoz as well as Basque popular singer and songwriter Enaut Elorrieta. They will perform besides our known sopranos Michaela Riener (AUS) and Laura Giavon (IT).

Location: Hernani, Gipuzkoa, Spain
